Couple of Draft Thoughts

***

I wrote a short piece on some prospects for PE.com.

I'll be putting up another post here in a few hours.  I'll also answer some questions from the last set of comments.  Lots of good discussions going on.

Tommy, rotoworld is reporting the Bears will release Alex Brown today.

Are you interested in him in green next year?

Do you think Eagles brass have interest in him?

Cliff said...

A lot of fans/media might not think the Eagles are willing to draft a LB as early as the 2nd round, but I think since we've addressed DE and RB this off-season, we're set up to take a LB early.

Have you talked about Eric Norwood from South Carolina? Whenever a player is considered one of the best at his position in the SEC, I can't help but to be intrigued. I think Norwood is projected to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick as well.

Cliff said...

What side does Alex Brown play on? Can he be a good back-up at RDE? If so, I'd be interested.

Honestly though, I think the Eagles told us how they'd feel about a 30+ year old DE when they cut Darren Howard.

So Cal EaglesFan said...

do you think the browns would be interested in trading shaun rogers to the eagles for gocong and a 5th next year?

Cliff said...

Ok, last comment, I promise...

I saw on the ScoutsNotebook mock draft that you have Earl Thomas going at #10. That's a lot earlier than I've seen on other mocks. I understand why, though.

My question is: How great is the drop-off in safety talent from Thomas to the next best guy? Having Berry go so high, teams in need of a safety are almost forced to select Thomas early if the talent gap is too wide. That's disappointing, because I really want him.

Cliff said...

Does Shaun Rogers fit our defense, though? If the Browns are interested in Gocong as a 3-4 OLB, why would they trade a talented NT that anchors the defense?

Tommy,
A little hindsight is 20/20 question. If we rewind to the start of the offseason, what do you think the Eagles primary gameplan was for the QBs? Do you think it was realistic in terms of value they would get for Vick and McNabb?

Also, how do you think Vick will react to being a backup to Kolb, if that is the way it plays out?

Myron said...

Warren Moon thinks the Eagles are showing McNabb a lack of respect:

True Shaun Rogers is a valuable nt for the browns but they have already been rumored to be shopping him and the browns would love to add a rush olb to replace wimbley and gocong can fit that need with plenty of nt prospects in the draft.

I think Bowman is a sleeper in this draft. I watched him alot and he just looked faster and stronger than everyone on the field at Pennstate...even more so than Lee.

He plays the game right, is a good pass rusher and a very reliable tackler.

Personally, I can see the Eagles taking him in the 3rd before we draft Weatherspoon in the 1st or Lee in the 2nd. We value those pics to highly to take a LB that high.

Our first 4 picks will be interesting. I'm on the Edds bandwagon as far as LB goes. Going only from what I have read, he seems to be exactly what we hoped Gocong would be. Also there isn't anyone else out there with his prototypical SAM size and skill set i.e. what we want from one. This isn't a knock on Fokou (though it is on Gocong), rather I'm not ready to rely on him. Gaither (particularly) and Jordan both looked like they maybe a long term solutions before question marks arose and clouded the situation.

So Cal EaglesFan said...

I agree about Edds being a strong possibility in the third round. I have heard comparisons of him being similar to Bradley. If that is the case and he could develop into our SAM of the future having Fokou as the backup would be nice and having two Bradleys on the field would be even nicer.

Cliff said...

I think there's a more fundamental question of whether we are looking for a WILL or a SAM.

Fokou seems to be a good fit for the WILL position, yet we assume he'll be the starter at SAM because of last season. Meanwhile, we cut our starting WILL, but we all assume Jordan is the starter until his replacement comes via the draft or trade.

Honestly, I'm just confused. Is Fokou definitely the starter at SAM (and not WILL)?

Sean Lee is going to be a beast in the NFL. He has above-average physical tools, but what sets him apart is that he is a student of the game, and a coach on the field.

Watch this interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHWfa1Hfcxo

This guy is going to be a steal for anybody who gets him in the 2nd or 3rd round. If he falls into the 4th round it will be scandalous.

Carson,

As it stands now, there's a report saying the Eagles will not go after DE Brown. The link is. . .

Cliff, I tink the only thing that is certain is that the Eagles like Stew and he's got a bum knee.

I think Fokou is in a similar position to Gaither in 2008 and Akeem in 2009. He's the starter for now and has an opportunity.

I'd love for us to get Johnson for KC as it would give is a FIT impact player who could play anywhere. Draft Edds and then let him, Jordan and Fokou 'em fight it out.

Gocong, Gaither and a pick might squeeze Johno from Arrowhead. I'm not sure if they are even interested?

So Cal EaglesFan said...

TSOP,
I heard when Eagles traded for Witherspoon they preferred Johnson of KC but asking price was higher so they went with Witherspoon. I would assume the interest would still be there but we would have to give up more than that for him because he started to shine even though he didn't start getting three picks and taking two of them to the house. If we could get him I am all for it.

Cliff said...

TSOP, I see our LB situation exactly as you described: we have Stew in the middle.

That's about it.

I really like Jordan. I like what I saw from Fokou, but understand that he's got a lot more to do. But I hope we can get a Lee, Bowman, or Edds in the draft to compete and be a long-time solution at LB like we thought (and still hope) Stew will be.

Let's say Stew is 100% and ready to start at MLB, where do you see KC's Johnson playing for us? Like you said, who knows if KC would even be interested in such a trade. Although, it seems like their LB depth chart could use an infusion of youth. Unfortunately, that means we probably would be able to pry Studebaker back. I really liked him.

Cliff said...

That should say: "probably wouldn't be able to pry Studebaker back."

Shaun Rogers was arrested for trying to board a plane w/ a loaded gun: http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d81747355&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

Cliff, to rely on Stew would be erroneous IMO. He won't be 100% in August though he may be fit enough to play, Stew will not make the impact in 2010 that he will make in 2011 if he remains healthy.

Johnson I believe could play any of the 3 spots for us, so if Stew is good to go, then he can play WiLL or SAM with Fokou/Akeem fighting for the remaining spot.

I believe that gives us the best chance of production from the LB spot this year and in years to come.

Johnson was a top 10 pick (I think) so I wouldn't mind if after securing a CB with 24, using our No#2 and player(s) as tools of persuasion.

It would be interesting to see it if it did happen. The 3-4 KC D powered by 3 ex-Eagles LB. Not sure the 3-4 Eagle advoctes would enjoy them having success though.

Tommy,

There are rumors swirling that Seattle OG Rob Sims signed his RFA tender today in order to speed up a possible trade to Chicago, Detroit, or PHILLY.

Have you heard anything about this? Do you think the Eagles have any interest in Sims? What kinda player is this guy? Would he be brought in as the starter at RG or a backup? Is he capable of playing Center? What do you think it'd take to get him? All I know is he was a 4th round pick in 2006, but I don't know if he's worth more than that now.

Myron said...

Damn, Tommy needs to get cracking on that new post.

The backlog here of ideas and discussions is flooded. :)

@TSOP

Given that he's going to be almost a full year out from his ACL tear, I think Bradley will be fairly close to full speed from the start of the season.

T_S_O_P said...

@mdh67

Do you think there will be no noticable difference (if he remains injury free) from 2010 to 2011?

You could see it in Buck from '06 to '07. He had longer to recover from his '05 (May) ACL, although he had msissed 2 seasons. They both have a history of knee injuries.

Wow,
You make a pretty convincing argument for Lee. I am on board, I guess. He's straight up football player. Futhermore, how much of a stretch is it to comp him to Jack Ham. Like the protoypical right time and place guy?
Also Tommy, you mentioned filming up on Dekota Watson... care to share, any Beason Comparisons? Many thanks
