Gameday - PS Finale

***

The excitement is really in the air, huh? Eagles at Jets. Week 4 of the preseason. Games just don't get much bigger than this. Okay, I was just practicing for when we do play a key game in the regular season. The game is meaningless for the team, but is sure as heck important for some players. I covered that in my new PE.com column:

* Changes Coming *

One player I didn't mention was Mr. Vick. He's going to get some real QB snaps tonight. It will be interesting to see how he does. Go back to last week and the throw to Baskett. Great throw, but the play was s-l-o-w. Took him forever to get back and make that read. Vick needs to be quicker tonight with his reads and the mental side of things.

I also hope we get to see him turn on the jets on some run or scramble. I'm curious as to how fast Vick is these days. He used to be an explosively fast player. That may have changed.

QUICK THOUGHTS

* Will one TE please emerge. I don't care if it is Tony Curtis, Rob Myers, Eugene Bright, or John Spagnola.

* I want to see Matt Wilhelm play some more SAM. He looked good last week.

* Eldra Buckley needs one more good game to hopefully sew up the #3 RB job. Don't let me down, sir.

* Bryan Smith and Jack Ikegwuonu are probably on the outside looking in. They are likely playing for Practice Squad spots at this point.

If Matt Wilhelm is playing well and Fokou is becomming more compelling every day, what is happening to Chris Gocong. While Gocong has been a good run stuffer he as failed to evolve into a playmaker. His blitzing rarely yields fruit and he is only slowly learning to cover and I haven't heard much this year as to his proficiency in coverage. Is a SLB who can only stuff the run someone who has a long term future in the league- especially as a starter? How do you evaluate his play this preseason?

Gocong is the only reliable LB on this team next to Jordan. period.

From what I understand SAM is a difficult position to evaluate because its not a "stats" position, mostly when you don't hear his name being called a lot it means he's doing his job.

Ike and Bryan Smith have both been disappointments along with Joe Mays. Those are 3 players I really wanted to see step up who haven't.

I'm not sure I understand the Moise Fokou situation at this point, he's looked pretty good but he hasn't done anything that makes me think I want him starting out there. He kind of looks like this years Joe Mays, only not as productive.

The real headscratcher is going to be what happens at WR. I think Amendola is the longest shot, but out of Gibson and Baskett and Brown who do we keep? I hope we deal Brown, Baskett is kind of a meh player for me I don't care what happens to him (start catching those tough fade passes and my tune might change though) and Gibson I think looks good but he doesn't look like more than a depth player to me at this point.

Maclin isn't ready to play a high % of snaps so its good that we have a lot of guys who can contribute.

Bryan Smith had an interception last week that led to the game winning drive. And he was hurt in the other game. How has he been disappointing?

I thought the interception was luck on his part. Other than that what has he done?

I'm hoping Sean Jones impresses tonight. A veteran who can sniff out the ball and tackle is my choice over Q Demps, who has skills but doesn't wrap up tackles and his coverage technique leaves him vulnerable to having speedy receivers get by him.

I agree with Stephen about Fokou being this years Mays. Get these guys on the field but not as a starter.

As for the rumor mill, if AJ goes to the Pats I will miss him. He always seemed like a good guy who knew his place and accepted his role. Don't spoil my fond memories of his performance in 2002 with facts about throwing all those interceptions!

Aj can play as long as he is coached properly. He needs to be put in the position to make simple plays. Case in point the pats game where he almost beat them.

Go back and watch the first game. Bryan smith got called offside but he wasn't. He destroyed the qb. After that he was tired. Then he got injured. Reserve your judgment on him til after tonight.

Gaines provided no pressure on that first series Where is Smith? No pressure up front at all
