Shocking Move

***

Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Eagles signed Michael Vick to a 2-year deal.

I wrote just the other day about why this move didn't make any sense. I stand by those previous comments. Unless there is an angle we don't know about, I don't get this move at all.

Now, there could be something going on that we haven't found out. Maybe the Eagles have worked out a deal involving Kevin Kolb or AJ Feeley. Maybe Kolb's injury is worse than was being reported. If either of those proved to be the case, then I'm fine with acquiring Vick.

The only other notion that comes to mind is if we brought him in to use as a RB. That's probably a reach, but I'm trying to put on my thinking cap and understand this odd move.

I have no problem with the Eagles signing Vick because of the whole dog-fighting angle. I'm ambivalent about that situation.

I'll check with my sources and see what I can find out.

I'm so blown away by this move, and bored with the Pats game, that I'll throw this out to you guys before getting all the facts. I can only imagine Vick is coming as backup to McNabb. If AJ was the #2qb, then this make sense as Vick can be considered an upgrade. If Kolb was the #2, then either his injury is serious and/or the Eagles have questions about him. If Vick is coming to challenge Donovan over the next 2 years, well, that's a can of worms that should not be opened right before the season begins.

I'm checking with people, but not hearing any inside info. I just can't figure this move out.

Well, I guess this reveals it...

I am Andy Reid.

My cover is blown.

Well, we know we ain't keeping 4 OBs on the roster. I hope there is a trade in the works for a TE.

@ Cliff...

When am I getting a job?

LOL. Just kidding, of course, but I did sense that there was an opening for the Eagles to take a shot at Vick. All of your reasons for NOT signing him are still valid, though, so we're all left wondering what the heck is going on.

I doubt Kolb is involved in any trade (but until a couple hours ago I seriously doubted the Eagles would take a chance on Vick), so that leaves A.J.

What are we trading for? A TE? I might pee myself.

They brought Vick in for the Wildcat. It will be him and Desean in a two back set 10 to 20 percent of the time on offense.

I would like to see Takeo Spikes back. I dont think we can get Peterson for Reggie Brown, but aren't the Seahawks hurting for WRs?

I think what was revealed tonight especially was the weakness of our front defense 4 to get pressure on the QB. I think Smith needs to move up on the depth chart.

One other thought...Buckley or Booker? Do we keep 4 RBs and 1 FB in case 36 goes down?

I think they deal Sheldon for Bo Scaife. Reggie Brown for a LB. and AJ Feeley for a 4th rounder.

I'm really not a fan of this move. It takes a sick person to brutally kill dozens of dogs with your own 2 hands. I was never a fan of Vick when he was in the league, I always thought he acted a punk. Frankly I have a hard time understanding how he's really going to help the team anyhow, if he couldn't master the Falcons watered down offense catered just to him, how can we rely on him to run Andy's complex offense if it came down to it? You only have 2 quarterbacks active on gameday, so how much wildcat are we going to run with him anyhow? Plus now we have a probable peta circus moving into town, as if though this city wasn't a lightning rod for controversy enough.

I have to imagine its going to take him a while to get into the swing of things too, he's spent more time in prison than playing football lately.

Stephen, because none of us know Vick personally we have to look to trusted people to give us insight on his post-prison psyche. The one guy who has really sat and talked to Vick is Tony Dungy. He's a guy whose opinion we can trust. He says Vick was extremely humbled by what happened and not just the prison sentence or the aftermath, but the public reaction to his actions.

I guess it depends on your personality, but I can't hold anything against Vick if he makes the best of this 2nd chance on life. It has to take a lot of courage to emerge from prison and jump back in to the spotlight when he knows the public can be very unforgiving.

I agree with Cliff. Tony Dungy's imprematur should be good enough for us all. Vick paid his debt to society and it's time to move on. I imagine A.J.'s heading to Minnesota or Kolb's knee is worse than expected as everyone suggests. I do think he's an upgrade over those 2 guys if he gets himself back to where he was at 2 years ago. I can't imagine they brought him in just for the wildcat. I applaud the boldness of the move and my hat's off to the Eagles off-season moves this year, not conservative at all!

Although I share the skepticisim about how they are going to use him enough to make this worthwhile (and he's 31 now, not much younger than McNabb), the part of this that interests me is whether it sets up a trade for AJ. Especially with Celek getting banged up last night, they sure could use a real backup TE.

Of the teams that have some potential excess at TE, New England has a rather weak backup QB situation, having just signed Andrew Walter. AJ played pretty well in 07 against NE, maybe Bill was impressed (and maybe G-Lew put in a good word). If NE is done waiting for Watson to break out, maybe a deal of AJ for Watson would work.

Also, assuming the Birds plan on using Vick in various packages each game, it means they will either have to include 3 QBs on the game day roster, theoretically wasting a spot, or Kolb would have to be the emergency #3, which probably wouldn't make him all that happy.

If I'm Ted Daisher, I'd like to get Vick to be the holder on my field goal unit and maybe somewhere in the punting unit.
