MCNABB vs ROMO

I heard someone talking about Monday night's game on the radio. They made the point that Romo is certainly the best QB in the NFC East. My initial reaction was "yeah, that's probably true".

Then I started to think about it. Romo puts up big time numbers, but we all know QB's are judged on wins. Tony got the Cowboys into the playoffs in 2006. Loss. He led them to the division title in 2007. Playoff loss.

How many "big games" has he really won? Dallas hosted us on Christmas day in 2006 with a chance to seal the division title. Romo had an awful game and we won 23-7. In the playoffs that year he threw for 189 yards against a Seahawks secondary that was more like a M*A*S*H unit. Great year for Tony, but he didn't exactly come through in the clutch. I'll forgive him the fumbled snap because of the whole "slick ball" conspiracy theory.

What about 2007? Tony struggled down the stretch. Dallas went 2-2 in December. Tony threw 3 TD's and 5 INT's. To be fair, he only played part of the game against Washington in the season finale. On the flip side, he was only 7 of 16 so it wasn't like he was playing all that well. Tony really struggled in the playoffs against the Giants. Give Big Blue some credit for good D, but Tony gets some blame as well.

Tony is 0-2 in playoff games. He hasn't won a "must win" game that I can think of.

Donovan won a lot of games for the Eagles starting in 2000. He did win a playoff game that year. He won a key game at The Meadowlands in 2001 to give us the NFC East title. He won on the road in Chicago to get us to the NFC Championship game. Donovan has won a bunch of division titles and playoff games. The only thing he lacks is a Super Bowl, the biggest and most difficult prize of them all.

Tony is certainly the future of the NFC East, but I wonder if I would take him over McNabb in a big game right now. Tony has had the luxury of playing with very gifted offensive players. McNabb won his first playoff game handing the ball to Chris Warren and throwing to Charles Johnson and Torrance Small. Donovan carried the 2000 Eagles on his back. Tony has never had that responsibility.

You can make an argument for McNabb or Romo, but it isn't as cut and dried as some people think. Like it or not, Donovan is the one of the duo that has led his team to victory in the postseason. That trumps completion percentage and QB rating in my book.

Romo is one of the most overrated QBs I've seen in a long time (minus Eli). He cannot play well against a solid D and throws WAY too many INTs to be considered an elite QB, like McNabb is when he is healthy which he finally is.

He played in 8 games last year against teams in the top 11 in total defense.

WAS - 2
NYG - 2
PHI - 2
NE
GB

Tony threw 21 TD's and 10 INT's. He had a rating over 100 in 5 of the games. Another one was 90+. His team went 5-3 in those games. In the one loss to WAS at the end of the year the starters only played part of the game.

Tony certainly loves to feast on bad defenses, but to say "horrible against good ones" is a bit too far.

Trust me when I say I wish you were right. I certainly hope he looks horrible on Monday.
