Crazy day of football. Let's hope all the wildness is gone and we have a nice quiet 73-0 win over Chicago.

Cincy loses at Oakland. Pathetic. How can a winning team lose to the Raiders?

Dollar Brand said...

Well there is hope for 73-0 since GSH isn't on the sidelines, right? Was Stacy a healthy scratch or is this precautionary?

Tommy Lawlor said...

I'm not sure. Stacy isn't a good matchup for the Bears quick DTs.

I'm still not sure if his knee is close to being 100%.

I'm excited we started off running the ball, but unfortunately it didn't help Donnie's accuracy as he missed a wide open Celek.

Still excited about the start though.

Tommy Lawlor said...

Good opening drive. Lots of running. Efficient passing.

RZ still a problem. Wish Donnie had run on that last play.

Pow! Go Trotter!

Tommy Lawlor said...

10-0. This is more like it.

Let's keep it up.

Earlier today I was thinking about how we used to run some TE screens down in the red zone back in the early AR / DM days.

Convoy to the endzone!!! Like the call, Mr. Reid. Still don't like you though....

jk

Been waiting for a WR screen for ages, especially after that Dallas game. Go Avant!

Dollar Brand said...

Nice block and release by Avant. It still is a pleasant surprise to have Winston play efficiently at RT as well.

Cliff said...

Other than that slightly overthrown ball to Celek in the end zone and the slant pass to Maclin that was a touch behind him (he caught it though), McNabb looks SHARP.

Boyboy said...

No pressure without blitzing again this year. That has to be addressed in the offseason. The defense really doesn't want to protect a 10 point lead, do they?

Boyboy said...

Thank goodness Cutler stinks. =)

Unknown said...

Wow, that was awful D. Cheers Jay!

Boyboy said...

A couple things that you can always count on from Eagles teams (not just the AR era):

1. No name player has a career game against us. (This is how we ended up with James Thrash, btw)
2. We invent ways to let QBs avoid what look like sure sacks.

Unknown said...

Macho almost gave you that big play Tommy. Almost..

Unknown said...

I forgot we were watching the Eagles.

Tommy Lawlor said...

Feels good to see the penalties going on the other team for once.

Frustrating game. Can't turn the ball over. It hurt not having DeSean go all the way with that punt.

Tommy Lawlor said...

What is with our tackling???

Boyboy said...

I haven't checked any numbers but it seems like sacks and turnovers have been down the last few weeks. We really need more playmakers on defense. I know the LBs are patchwork, but we don't have a dominant DE (Cole is very good, not great) or a shutdown CB. Mikell was supposed to be on the verge of Pro Bowl, but I don't see it this year.

Nice work, again letting Cutler escape the sack...and a penalty to go with it.

Pitmanite said...

wow that was an awful attempt at tackling by our defense on earl bennett.

Tommy Lawlor said...

Are the Bears...us?

Penalties and RZ problems.

Tommy Lawlor said...

We sit here at halftime leading 10-9, but I'm miserable. Turnovers and sloppy play are killing me.

Can we snap out of the funk and get going?

Boyboy said...

Obviously, neither team really wants to win this. Andy and Lovie should just agree to call it a tie and end this thing. We can all stop our eyes from bleeding from watching this mess, and get to bed at a decent hour.

Unknown said...

Man i hate Sunday night games. A second half starting about 3:30 am is a bit late.

Not gonna be able to sleep after a first half like this though, anything could happen. I won't be sleeping well tonight!

Pitmanite said...

one positive is we actually had a decent drive we scored on. i agree though that 10 weeks into the season we still shouldn't be looking this sloppy.

also, i don't want to see vick and his 50% completion percentage dropping back to throw the ball from the WC. still think we'd be better with desean or shady running the wildcat. only concern w/ desean would be him taking a pounding.

Unknown said...

Why is it that every time we play a turnover machine, we don't get any turnovers? Ever notice that? Will Asante Samuel ever learn that he can't tackle with just his left elbow?

Tommy Lawlor said...

Cole with a sack. That's good D. Excellent design, execution.

Now for some points.

Boyboy said...

Too many 3rd and longs tonight. Can't convert those all game.

I'll repeat what I said last week. Sav Rocca stinks. They should have just ripped his badge off his jersey as he came off the field and sent him to the locker room.

Boyboy said...

10 point lead = gone. Pretty good defensive series though, given the Bears starting field position. Anyone else feel like the longer an opponent's FG attempt, the more likely they are to make it?

Pitmanite said...

boyboy, even though rocca has continued to be below average to average (at best), Andy can't bring another punter in because it would take him too long to get accustomed to their complicated punting schemes.

Tommy Lawlor said...

We seem to be running okay now, but the passing game is gone. This team is going to drive me insane.

And we're only down 2 points. That may add to the frustration. This game is right there, but the team just seems to have something go wrong here and there. That stuff adds up.

Unknown said...

McNabb throws at the receivers feet, cutler throws over their heads. Put them together and we might have something.

Tommy Lawlor said...

TD = HUGE!!!

Tommy Lawlor said...

I hate kicking the ball to CHI. They have dangerous return guys. 3 or 4 of them.

Pitmanite said...

i never doubted the Eagles offense for a second!

Tommy Lawlor said...

The sign of a good team is that they respond to a score with a score. CHI just responded to us. Let's see if we can return the favor.

Boyboy said...

The defense has come up really small on both Chicago possessions following our TDs. I'd call out McDermott, but this has been happening for a few years now. In tight games, our D doesn't seem to protect leads.

Pitmanite said...

Once again a penalty kills our drive.

Boyboy said...

In a game where we are finally running the ball and converting short yardage, sacks, penalties and turnovers are killing drives. At some point, you have to stop pointing fingers at coaches and QBs and just say, "hey, maybe we are just not as good as advertised."

How many 3rd and 8+ plus yard situations have we been in tonight?

Unknown said...

Too many mistakes. Every week is the same. They're not playing well right now.

Pitmanite said...

SHADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boyboy said...

UN-F'N-BELIEVABLE

Tommy Lawlor said...

The quick-turnaround defense has been really good tonight. CHI has had some good FP due to turnovers, but no TDs off them and one blocked FG.

Boyboy said...

They read the damn screen and still couldn't locate the RB. FG range.

I can't believe we blocked that.

Boyboy said...

Yes. They are holding up after the turnovers.

Pitmanite said...

can we talk about the fact that maclin is having a nice little season for a rookie? back to back years of having rookie WRs come in and contribute right away after some dismal years at the position.

Boyboy said...

Need to hurry up. You want time to get the ball back in case CHI scores.

Tommy Lawlor said...

Wow.

I'm happy, but nervous as a motherscratcher.

Boyboy said...

Mcnabb is always a little behind on those slants. Minus the fumble, McCoy has had a really nice night. The O-line is finally moving people off the ball tonight.

Let's hope the D proves me wrong on the "don't want to protect a lead" thing.

I just have to say right now, win or lose, I love love love love love love love the way we stuck with the run on that drive. I can't remember the last time we ran the ball so much in the 4th quarter, I just love it.

Boyboy said...

My poor old dog really wants this game to end so he can go to bed.

Pitmanite said...

that TD run is a product of the Eagles making an effort to run the ball more this game. you soften a defense up a little, the defense isn't just able to play the pass and has to guess a little, you get your o-lineman in more of a groove, and ultimately you get better execution.

they are running the ball 40% of the time tonight, compared to games where we've seen us run the ball only 25% or 30% of the time.

Pitmanite said...

wow, thank goodness jay cutler has been god awful tonight on his long throws. he's has at least 3 guys wide open tonight and missed them badly.

Boyboy said...

Didn't look like he stepped into that throw. What strong-armed QB do we know that does that from time to time?

Was just peeking at the profootballtalk.com chat -- anyone else find Florio to be a little bit pompous? Don't get me wrong, I love that site...but why have a football chat if you're not going to answer any questions seriously?

Tommy Lawlor said...

This feels a lot like 2007. I think we've got a better defense this time around, but I guess we'll see in a minute.

Anonymous said...

Wow, deja vu anyone? Chicago down by 4 with no timeouts and less than 2 minutes left getting the ball back?

Unknown said...

Good 3rd and short play. And running the ball on 3rd and 4 was the right thing. Up to the defense now. Don't want a repeat of '07.

Boyboy said...

Hmmmm....I was thinking that would have been a nice spot to get McNabb on the edge with some sort of run/pass option. Now we have to cover this punt better than we've covered KOs tonight -- AND hope that Cutler doesn't turn into Brian Griese.

Pitmanite said...

tommy, you think running on 3rd and 4 was the right play there? with the 2 minute warning coming up anyway, thought maybe a pass would've been better. though as much as i cry about them not running the ball enough, i don't really feel like i have any room to criticize them.

Boyboy said...

WTF just happened with the broadcast?

Unknown said...

Well, we won a close game, Tommy.

Pitmanite said...

well gentlemen, though it's not a night without some concern. it's still a W. have a good one.

Tommy Lawlor said...

Awesome.

O came up big with the TD.

D came up big with the takeaway.

Anonymous said...

Wooo hooo! Damn I never thought I'd see us win a game this way. I'm just in love with how we attacked the second half of this game, running the ball.

Boyboy said...

Most satisfying W of the year. It wasn't as fun as blowing out the Giants, but it was good to see us A) run the ball B) come from behind in the 4th qtr C) seal the deal on defense. Plus, we overcame some turnovers -- made a positive out of some negatives.

Myron said...

While a win is always nice, keep this in perspective: if Jay Cutler wasn't a complete, unmitigated failure, we probably would have lost this game to the tune of 14-21 points.

Huge problems with our defense leaving guys wide open, rookies just being rookies, McNabb being mediocre and overly reliant on the big play...

But at least we converted 3rd/4th & inches more than once this time, though.

And Andy decided to run the ball. Wow.

Tommy Lawlor said...

@ Myron...

I hear what you're saying, but that stuff works both ways. We dropped at least 2 INTs. We had some plays where we were just a bit off.

CHI lost 2 TDs with the bad passes. There were 3 bad throws, but 2 of them were on the same drive. Also, they did get a FG. CHI was down 11 net points with Cutler's mistakes. That's big, but not as huge as it seems like.
